Dannah Fritz, Certified Barton Tutor, Orton-Gillingham instructor

My introduction to children with reading difficulties began when my son was diagnosed with dyslexia the summer before first grade. My husband and I were devastated, since we are both huge readers. We couldn’t imagine having a child that did not love books the way we did. The educational psychologist recommended an Orton Gillingham approach for reading intervention, so I began researching. Luckily, I found The Barton Reading and Spelling System that summer. After two years of hard work, our son was reading above grade level. Soon after, we couldn’t keep a book out of his hands. After seeing what a difference tutoring made in my son’s life, I decided to become certified and work one on one with other children. As a result, I have seen the difference that can be made in a child’s life with the right kind of tutoring.

In 2012, I received my Advanced certification through Barton. I hope to continue many years of bringing the gift of reading to my students.

Tiffany VillacortaBuer, Certified Barton Tutor, Orton-Gillingham instructor

After watching a sibling and cousin have difficulty in school with spelling, long study times, and the need to go over and over the material, I became familiar with dyslexia. After having my own children, I began working in the elementary schools helping children who were falling behind. The more I worked with them, the more I recognized similar issues. I began educating myself about dyslexia and what options were available. I was astonished at the lack of knowledge the teachers had regarding dyslexia. When I realized that 1 in 5 children can have some form of dyslexia, I knew I had to get involved. Over 15 years later I continue to educate myself on the science of reading, becoming versed in phonemic awareness instruction, Orton-Gillingham letter to sound correspondence, Structured Word Inquiry and morphology instruction, fluency, writing and comprehension. I have an Advanced Barton Certification, and have worked with Peter Bower’s in Structured Word Inquiry. I have been instructing students since 2011 and training and developing gifted tutors since 2020. I believe everyone should be given the opportunity and resources to read.
